Phoenix Gasworks 01 - Introduction and Planning

An introduction to the Phoenix Gasworks on the Southwark Bridge Layout, giving historical details for the model, general information about how a gasworks operates and how the model for this gasworks was planned.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 02 - Track

The track design and standards for the Phoenix Gasworks are described along with details of the control mechanism.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 03 - Retort House

The retort house is the first stage in gas production in the Phoenix Gasworks. This video gives background about the different types of retort available and how this affects the building layout.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 04 - Condenser

A brief look at the condenser in the Phoenix Gasworks and the different design that were in use at the time.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 05 - Exhauster

Gives information about and a couple of examples of exhausters in a gasworks.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 06 - Livesey Washer

The remaining tar in the gas is removed using a Livesey washer. The way this works and how the model was built is described in this video.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 07 - Glovers Scrubber

To remove ammonia the gas was washed by a shower of water flowing down inside a round tower. The process was known as scrubbing. Details of this device invented by Mr Glover and how the model was built are captured in this video.

Phoenix Gasworks 08 - Purifier

To remove sulphides and cyanides the gas was passed through a purifier. This video shows uses detailed engineering drawings to show how a purifier is made and describes how the model was built.

Phoenix Gasworks 09 - Gas Holders

Two gas holders are represented in the Phoenix Gasworks on the Southwark Bridge Layout, a spiral guided type and a vertical lift column type. Both models models are built from engineering drawings shown in this video. The construction of the vertical column type is described in detail as this was one of the first models to be created using 3D printing for the layout.

Phoenix Gasworks 10 - Oxide Shed

The oxide shed was used to process spent iron oxide from the purifier. The video shows historical information for the building and how the model was constructed.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 11 - Coal Elevator

To supply coal to the retorts and elevator was used. This lifted the coal from the coaling stage up to first floor level in the retort house.

Southwark Bridge Layout

Phoenix Gasworks 12 - Telpher

To remove coke from the retorts a Telpher was used. This is a crane running on a mono rail. The approach to the model build for the track, Telpher vehicle and Telpher shed is described in this video.

Phoenix Gasworks 13 - Loco Shed

This video gives details about how the loco shed was made for the Phoenix Gasworks on the Southwark Bridge Layout.
